| Oz Our responses to everyday life create patterns of behaviour that become a part of our physical selves. These patterns are like shadows that not only reveal but also affect the structure of our inner selves. Shadow Yoga is a form of Hatha (physical) Yoga developed by Natanaga Zhander from the teachings of ancient Hatha Yoga texts. It uses the practice of set sequences of flowing movements to bring understanding of how your body works and how this reflects the way that you are. Eventually, after consistent practice of the four preludes of Shadow Yoga and the subsequent asanas (postures) you will be able to develop a "freestyle" practice bringing you long-term health and happiness. The beginners class (Tuesday 6.15pm - 8 weeks) is for people who are completely new to yoga. The class begins with simple movements to warm-up the neck, shoulders, waist, wrists and ankles, and then moves on to powerful standing movements to strengthen the legs and build heat in the body. You will also start to learn to link the movement of breath with the movement of the body and to memorise a simple sequence to practise at home. This class is also suitable for people who have some yoga experience but would prefer to start Shadow Yoga from first principles. The experienced class (Thusday 6.15pm) is for people who have previously practised Shadow Yoga or who have several years' experience of other forms of yoga. This class teaches Chaya yoddha sancalanam (churning of the shadow warrior) and includes standing work with contractions and extensions of the body, greater control of the breath and Uddiyana Bandha (abdominal lock). This is followed by a sequence of basic asanas (postures) on the floor with a backbend, forward bend, twist and inversion. Students will be expected to practise at home. Oz has been practising yoga for 18 years. She has previously taught Iyengar and Astanga Yoga and has worked with Shandor Remete for the last 10 years. Please refrain from eating within at least two hours of the class. You will need to wear loose comfortable clothing and have bare feet. OZ oz@globehouse.org |
