| John Has been studying and practising yoga for over twenty years. His classes steer clear of current labels and ideologies but focus on the basic processes shared by all styles of hatha yoga. The work builds strength and stability through postures that open the joints and align the limbs, creates physical lightness with stretches that release tension, and energises the whole system through careful attention to the breath. The disciplined integration of these elements sharpens the senses and concentration, restoring balance, calmness and confidence to both body and mind. |

| A typical class involves seated postures that develop flexibility in the shoulders, hips and knees, a sequence of standing poses for legs, arms and torso, and a final phase of gentler work to harmonise what has gone before and leave you deeply relaxed. In all phases the co-ordination of breath and action, and the focus of attention in the abdominal centre promote firmness in the organic core. All classes are suitable for both beginners and students with previous experience in any style. There is no standard to be reached, only the pleasure to be found in your own self-development. You will need to wear loose, comfortable clothing, and not eat for at least two hours before the class. We work with bare feet. The studio provides mats, blankets and other equipment. Progress in yoga, the discovery of its enormous benefits, is made through commitment and repetition. A weekly class is the minimum basis for this adventure. The classes are drop-in, no pre-booking is necessary but could new people please contact John before they start. John can also offer private classes by arrangement. yoga@john-porter.co.uk |
